Fishing lingo is a language all its own, so occasionally on the report I will drop a fishing term and definition to make sure everyone’s on the same page as they talk about Maumee river and lake Erie fishing. So whether you enjoy bobber fishing in a quiet pond, heading out to the lake to troll for walleye , or anything in between, let’s get linguistic.

crap·pie /ˈkräpē,ˈkrapē/ noun- a North American freshwater fish of the sunfish family, the male of which builds a nest and guards the eggs and young. Tasty.

MAUMEE RIVER

You’ve heard me say it quite a bit this year, the Maumee river is super low and has been that way since May. We haven’t had “fill up the river rain” since spring time. That being said, now that the temperatures are dropping , the fish are moving a little bit and starting to feed while getting ready for winter.

Start basic : A 1/8  ounce lead head with a pink , green or motor oil twister tail. Cast it out and work it with a  steady retrieve. Depending on the area, walleye, smallmouth, or steelhead might take an interest in the lure.

LAKE ERIE

I just want to get some information out early concerning the fall walleye fishing activity, this is  when the walleye and yellow perch move in close and can be taken at night right off the shoreline. Each autumn there is an anticipated flurry of walleye action in Lake Erie’s central and western basins. Here in  October when the lake temperature approaches the 50’s we start to see  plenty  of savvy walleye hunters prowling the piers and shorelines.  from the Port Clinton area up thru the Maumee bay and up into Michigan’s  lake Erie access points.  area. These anglers are tuned into the nocturnal walleye feeding action. Lake Erie central and western basin schools make what many call a “pre-spawn staging movement” each fall. Schools of big fish move in off their respective spawning areas and “stage” or rest, after putting on a feeding binge, fattening up for the spring spawn. Thousands of western basin walleye move toward the shoreline drop-offs in search of gizzard shad and other baitfish, drawn by warmer waters. They’re often located close to the first or second deep-water drops and move into shoreline shallows to surface feed at night. Many angler that track the conditions believe that prime activity generally takes place in the period from 3 days before the 1/2 moon to 3 days after the full moon.  One  thing I have noticed, rattling crank baits generally out fish the quiet ones .   Night anglers at the piers use predominately  Rattletraps and Bomber Long-A type of lures. Storm paddle tails  can be used to mx it up  for a different bait presentation have seen success with anglers using both types. Keep one thing in mind the water temperatures cool, slow your presentation.

Backlash – When casting or letting out line under tension, the revolving spools on many types of reels can begin to spin faster than the line comes off. This results in a tangle known as backlash, or a “bird’s nest.”

Remember you can always stop into the shop and we have all the gear and lures you will need this season to be successful.

Crankbait – A lure that has a swimming action of its own as it’s retrieved (via cranking the reel) through the water.

Have fun be safe and good luck fishing
