This is a pretty common debate among recreational and serious fishermen. To be honest, both times of day are generally pretty good for fishing and often it really comes down to personal preference.
To touch on the morning bite .
The morning is a great time to catch walleye because the available light is reduced giving walleye a tactical advantage over baitfish that can’t see as well in the low light. Peak walleye feeding occurs during low light conditions. The best times of the day to fish for walleye are during the transitions of dawn and dusk. In the morning, fish about a half an hour(when legal) before sunrise to a few hours after. You’re likely targeting 6:00 am to 9:00 am.
All in all sunup is an exceptional time to catch walleyes. Suck it up and get up early if you want to tap the morning bite…prep your gear the night before so it’s ready to go,flip the switch , warm up the truck, load the coffee mug, and roll out.
Vision is a primary tool used by walleye when hunting their prey. A walleyes eyesight reacts strongly to red, orange and greens of the color spectrum. Chartreuse, Orange and Red are very popular colors , but don’t forget to mix in Glow/White and Black. Here at the shop we prefer the the bright spectrum, like Chartreuse, on brighter days, and the darker end of the spectrum, like Orange or Xmas lights on cloudy days.
