Maumee River Report- March 5th 2018- Big Jack Contest Starts Today

The Valenti brothers , pictured above, got into some fish both Saturday and Sunday. Many of the local fishermen understand and change their techniques daily to adapt to the ever changing river conditions. Most of these anglers are not discouraged by the extreme spectrum’s of the river conditions and you see them out there in high or low water catching fish.

SUNRISE-7:04 AM

SUNSET-6:28 PM

Wading to Bluegrass Island is not possible

Today we start the weekly “BIG JACK ” contest.  Runs Monday  thru close of business Sundays during the walleye run.

Bring your big jacks up to the shop to be weighed , measured and photographed.

PRIZE IS $25 GIFT CERTIFICATE  AND MONTHLY BIG JACK GETS 50$ –  Jacks (males)only , caught in Maumee river, free of snag marks, heaviest wins.

Prize must be claimed within 30 days .

We will have the updated leader board in the shop.

This past weekend we started to see some walleye fresh from the lake being taken. With the temperatures getting colder at night its going to be a few days at best before the river starts to warm past the lower 40s. That means that the bite may not be fast and furious this week  so fishing pressure will be light. None the less it is encouraging that the fish have begun to move in.

Chartrusse and Firetiger seem to be the colors that are working right now . 3 ft leader and 3/4 oz weight.

This a Carolina rig- with an egg sinker. Just substitute a floating jig head for the bare hook pictured. This style allows for better sensitivity to feel the bite.

The river level has dropped just about a foot  since yesterday and will probably come down another 6 in or so throughout the day.  As we get closer to that 582 ft  mark more areas of the river  will become fishable. Here is a quick list of some local public access sites , if you are not familiar you are always welcome to stop in the shop for directions.

Maumee Side of river- Jerome rd rapids,Sidecut Metropark, Bluegrass Island crossings, The Towpath and White street access.

Perrysburg side of river- Orleans Park, Orleans hiking path, Ft Meigs, Davis Overlook, Buttonwood Campground, and Schroders Campground.

Have fun be safe and good luck fishing
