The river has held steady at its current level for the last week , and this weekend is shaping up to be great for fishing, All of our local access areas have been producing good numbers of catfish and smallmouth bass. A good area to try now that the water level has stabilized is Grand Rapids area near the dam and Mary Jane Thurston Park. This area is know for its BIG Cats, resident walleye, crappie and smallmouth action.

LAKE ERIE
Western Basin
Walleye
Where: Walleye have been caught 2 to 4 miles north of Ward’s Canal, off Magee Marsh, around Niagara and Crib reefs of the Camp Perry firing range, near “L†can of the Camp Perry firing range, and around Gull Island Shoal.
How: Anglers trolling have caught fish on spoons behind divers and worm harnesses with inline weights or bottom bouncers. Anglers casting are using weight forward spinners or mayfly rigs.
Yellow Perch
Where: Yellow perch have been caught near the Toledo harbor light, near Niagara Reef, around “D†and “G†cans of the Camp Perry firing range, northwest of Rattlesnake Island, around North Bass Island, and off Marblehead Lighthouse.
How: Perch spreaders or crappie rigs with minnows fished near the bottom produce the most fish.
Smallmouth Bass and Largemouth Bass
Where: Smallmouth bass have been caught along the shorelines of the Bass Islands and on some of the reefs of the Camp Perry firing range. Largemouth bass have been caught on the main lake shoreline around Catawba and Marblehead, and in harbors in the same area.
How: Bass have been caught on tube jigs, crankbaits and drop shot rigs.
Central Basin
Walleye
Where: Walleye have been caught off Cranberry Creek. Good fishing was reported north of Wildwood Park in 61 feet of water, north of Ashtabula Lakeshore Park in 72 feet of water, and northeast of Conneaut in 56 feet of water.
How: Anglers are trolling Dipsy divers and Jet divers off planer boards, with purple or gold spoons and stick baits, and green worm harnesses.
Yellow Perch
Where: Anglers are catching fish on the Vermilion dumping grounds and north of Edgewater Park in 47 to 52 feet of water. Very good fishing was reported north of Ashtabula Lakeshore Park in 50 to 51 feet of water, and northwest of Conneaut in 48 to 50 feet of water. Fishing from shore has been slow off the piers in Cleveland and Fairport Harbor.
How:Perch spreaders with minnows fished near the bottom produce the most fish.
Smallmouth Bass
Where: Fishing has been good in 10 to 25 feet of water around harbor areas in Fairport Harbor, Cleveland, Ashtabula and Conneaut.
How: Anglers are using crayfish, leeches and drop shot rigs.
The Lake Erie water temperature is 74 off Toledo and 73 off Cleveland according to the nearshore marine forecast.
