The water in the river is cooling and dropping. Starting to see a few walleye and crappie being caught again as the the river becomes more accessible . 1/4 or 1/8 lead head jig with a twister or plastic paddle tail bait seems to be the most effective.Â
Lake Erie
The water temperature off Toledo is 48 degrees, off Cleveland 55 degrees, and off Erie 51 degrees.
As Lake Erie continues to cool, the huge schools of gizzard shad move to warmer shallow waters, especially in and around the mouths of the rivers, including the Maumee River. The big walleye follow the shad and feed mostly after dark. Many anglers think that their only chance with out a boat to catch walleye had been to wade the Maumee and Sandusky rivers in spring and cast lures to spawning walleye. But this fall  Walleye are starting to show up in their traditional fall feeding grounds as they follow shad nearshore-late night pier fishing. Shore bound anglers can start picking up walleye near and after dark casting crankbaits and lipless crankbaits that imitate shad. Slower presentations have been better after dark.
