MONTHLY BIG CATFISH CONTEST IS STILL ON ..$ 25 DOLLAR GIFT CERTIFICATE ..AND MUST BE CAUGHT IN THE MAUMEE RIVER.  43 LBS IS THE WEIGHT TO BEAT AS OF THIS MORNING.
LETS TALK BIG CATFISH! This 43lb catfish came in a few days ago, he was alive and released back into the river. This is becoming great sport here on the Maumee river as we as sportsman encourage and help clean up our river systems , these big cats are becoming  more abundant. Typically rigging a heavy catfish pole with 20lb test , using a steel leader ,big hooks and live bluegill for bait is what is triggering the bite for these  big fish, and the y are located allover the Maumee. we have seen 30 lb.’s and up taken from downtown Toledo all the way up to Grand Rapids and Defiance and all points between. So DREAM BIG and go get one of these river monsters. Feel free to stop by the shop and we can help you get rigged up and point you toward a good location.
LEECHES AND SMALLMOUTH BASS
Smallmouth bass love leeches. Anglers catch tons of smallmouth bass every year shallow and deep from spring through fall on leeches. As the water warms above 50 degrees, leeches tend to swim much better. A lively leech is just asking to get eaten. Some of the top smallmouth bass anglers learned that the regular-sized leeches tend to catch more fish and they catch big fish as well. A bobber and leech is very effective for smallmouth bass when these fish are in the shallows.  This rig works great from late spring through summer for bigger smallmouth bass. There have been a lot of smallmouth caught this week , many of them on leeches, If you have never fished with this common fish bait , stiop in the shop and we can teach you how to rig the leech and areas to target smallmouth.
LAKE ERIE:
As many of you have seen that the Lake Erie region has had a minnow shortage over the last month. Between the non stop heavy rains, consistently strong winds , the full moon and now agle blooms it has been very difficult for any of the minnow boat captains to get out and catch any minnows. So I figured that I would post a bit of information in last weekend post with some  images concerning the three most popular minnows species used on lake Erie and The Maumee river for bait.
