Well it has been too cold for most anglers to fish open water and too warm for ice fishing. Looks like its going to warm this weekend before the temps drop into the high 20s at night. Fingers crossed that will be the start of our ice fishing season. I have observed along with many other Lake Erie fisherman that good ice cover on lake Erie leads to good spring hatches. We do not have any solid data linking winter weather to better spawning and catch rates the following spring. However, that doesn’t mean that some connection is not there. My thoughts ree that a strong winter is often associated with suppression of things like bacterial diseases, parasites and the like. So it follows that the suppression of bacteria and parasistes certainly could benefit hatching walleye to a degree. Again fingers crossed for some good ice this January.
I have heard a few good reports from out on the various piers this past week. The walleye are still feeding on shad and shiners so as long as there is no ice then the night pier fishing ought to be good.
Have a Merry Christmas !
