Its early , the water is still cold and we are waiting for the run to start in earnest
Some of the best baits to use during the run are the Berkeley power-bait scented grubs. The “firetiger” and “christmas lights” colors being the most popular.
The purpose of the infused scent is to provide a cover scent and a pleasing taste that may make the fish hold on to the bait a little bit longer and increase the chances for a good hook set. Back in the day anise was originally used as a cover scent to mask any human or plastic odors. There are quite a few research programs on various fish species and how they utilize scent as a means of targeting bait. Some species are more scent-driven than others ,for example carp, catfish, and trout. Then again others do not rely on scent as much as they use sight, sound, and vibration , for example largemouth bass. The walleye is a game fish that relies on both sight and scent to locate and catch its prey.Walleye have excellent vision in low light conditions, so they usually feed at dawn and dusk when they can see better than their prey. Walleye also have an acute sense of taste. They have taste buds on their face and lips, so they really dont need to put something in their mouths to taste it,thus a scented bait gives the angler an extra edge.
